TMJ TREATMENT IN WARREN, NJ

Jaw Pain Shouldn't Be Something You Simply Learn to Live With

Jaw soreness, headaches, facial tension, clicking or popping, and difficulty opening or closing your mouth can interfere with everything from eating to sleeping comfortably. These symptoms may be related to dysfunction of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ) or the muscles that help control your jaw.

At The Star Dental Group, Dr. Scott takes the time to understand your symptoms, evaluate how your jaw is functioning, and look for factors that may be contributing to your discomfort. When appropriate, conservative treatment can help reduce strain on the jaw and protect your teeth from the effects of clenching or grinding.

WHAT IS TMJ/TMD?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow your jaw to move when you speak, chew, and yawn. These joints work together with the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and other structures to control comfortable jaw movement.

TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, refers to conditions that affect the jaw joints, the muscles that control jaw movement, or both. Although TMJ technically refers to the joint itself, the term is commonly used to describe the pain and dysfunction associated with TMD.

Because the jaw is involved in so many everyday movements, problems with the joint or surrounding muscles can cause symptoms that extend beyond the jaw itself.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF TMJ/TMD

TMJ disorders can affect people differently, and symptoms may come and go or change over time. Some people primarily notice discomfort in the jaw, while others experience symptoms in the face, head, neck, or around the ears.

Common signs and symptoms may include:

Jaw pain or tenderness

Facial or jaw muscle soreness

Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing your mouth

Difficulty or discomfort while chewing

Limited jaw movement or difficulty opening your mouth fully

A jaw that occasionally locks or feels stuck

Headaches or tension around the temples

Discomfort around the ear

Neck or facial tension associated with jaw discomfort

Signs of clenching or grinding, such as worn or sensitive teeth

Clicking or popping alone does not necessarily mean you have a TMJ disorder. What matters is whether the joint sounds are accompanied by pain, limited movement, locking, or other symptoms that interfere with normal function.

WHAT CAUSES TMJ PROBLEMS

TMJ disorders can develop for a variety of reasons, and sometimes there is more than one factor contributing to jaw pain or dysfunction. In other cases, there may not be one obvious cause.

Factors that may contribute to TMJ symptoms include:

Clenching or grinding your teeth

Tension or overuse of the jaw muscles

Injury or trauma to the jaw

Arthritis or other changes within the jaw joint

Changes in the structures within the joint

Habits that repeatedly strain the jaw, such as frequent gum chewing

Stress can also contribute to increased clenching or muscle tension, which may make existing jaw discomfort more noticeable.

Because TMJ symptoms can have different causes, identifying what may be contributing to your discomfort is an important part of determining what type of care may be appropriate.

HOW WE EVALUATE JAW PAIN & TMJ SYMPTOMS

Because jaw pain can have different causes, understanding what is contributing to your symptoms is an important first step.

Dr. Scott will talk with you about what you’ve been experiencing, when your symptoms occur, and whether certain activities seem to make them better or worse. He’ll also evaluate how your jaw moves and look for tenderness, muscle tension, joint sounds, and signs of clenching or grinding.

Your teeth and bite may also provide clues about the forces being placed on your jaw. When appropriate, additional imaging or evaluation may be recommended to better understand what is happening within the joint or surrounding structures.

The goal is not simply to treat the symptom, but to understand the factors that may be contributing to your discomfort so we can determine the most appropriate next step.

CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT FOR TMJ SYMPTOMS

Treatment for TMJ symptoms depends on what is contributing to your discomfort. Whenever appropriate, Dr. Scott takes a conservative approach focused on reducing strain on the jaw, protecting the teeth, and helping the muscles and joints function more comfortably.

For patients who clench or grind their teeth, a custom nightguard may be recommended to help protect the teeth and reduce the forces placed on the jaw while you sleep.

Depending on your symptoms and their underlying cause, additional recommendations may include changes in daily habits, at-home care, or evaluation by another healthcare provider when appropriate.

Not every case of jaw pain requires the same treatment. We’ll help you understand what we’re seeing, discuss your options, and determine the next step that makes the most sense for you.

AT-HOME WAYS TO REDUCE JAW STRAIN

Small changes in how you use your jaw may help reduce strain and give sore muscles and joints a chance to rest, particularly during periods when symptoms are more noticeable.

Depending on your symptoms, helpful habits may include:

Avoiding gum chewing and other repetitive jaw movements

Choosing softer foods temporarily when chewing is uncomfortable

Avoiding opening your mouth excessively wide when yawning or eating

Becoming aware of daytime clenching and allowing your jaw to relax

Using heat or cold as recommended for muscle or joint discomfort

Finding ways to reduce stress and muscle tension when these seem to contribute to clenching

These measures may help manage discomfort, but persistent or worsening jaw pain, locking, or difficulty moving your jaw should be evaluated rather than managed with self-care alone.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TMJ/TMD

Is jaw clicking or popping always a sign of a TMJ disorder?

No. Clicking or popping can occur without pain or other problems and does not necessarily mean treatment is needed. If the sounds are accompanied by pain, locking, limited movement, or difficulty chewing, an evaluation can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Clenching and grinding can place additional strain on the jaw muscles and joints and may contribute to discomfort in some patients. They can also cause wear, sensitivity, or damage to the teeth over time.

For patients whose symptoms are associated with clenching or grinding, a custom nightguard may be recommended to protect the teeth and help reduce the forces placed on the jaw. Whether a nightguard is appropriate depends on your individual symptoms and what may be contributing to them.

Jaw muscle tension and clenching can sometimes contribute to headaches, particularly around the temples or sides of the head. Because headaches can have many different causes, persistent or unusual headaches should be appropriately evaluated.
Some TMJ symptoms may improve with time and conservative care, while others can persist or recur. If you’re experiencing ongoing pain, jaw locking, limited movement, or symptoms that interfere with eating or everyday activities, it’s a good idea to have them evaluated.
Consider scheduling an evaluation if jaw pain persists, keeps returning, makes chewing uncomfortable, limits how far you can open your mouth, or is accompanied by locking or other changes in jaw function.
