Noticing that your gums are pulling away from your teeth can be unsettling—especially if your teeth suddenly appear longer than they used to.

But does gum recession mean your teeth will eventually fall out?

Not necessarily.

Gum recession itself does not automatically mean that a tooth is going to be lost. However, recession can sometimes be a sign of an underlying problem that affects the tissues and bone supporting your teeth.

Understanding why your gums are receding is the first step in determining whether your teeth are truly at risk.

Gum recession alone does not necessarily mean that you will lose your teeth. However, if the recession is related to advanced gum disease and loss of the bone and tissues that support the teeth, tooth stability can eventually be affected.

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding a tooth pulls back or wears away, exposing more of the tooth—or sometimes part of the tooth’s root.

As the gumline recedes, you may notice that a tooth looks longer than it used to. The exposed root surface may also become sensitive to hot, cold, or touch because it is not protected by enamel in the same way as the crown of the tooth.

Gum recession can affect a single tooth or multiple teeth, and it can develop gradually enough that you may not notice it right away.

What Causes Receding Gums?

There is no single cause of gum recession.

It may be associated with periodontal disease, aggressive brushing, a naturally thin gum tissue type, tooth position, bite-related forces, or other individual factors. In some cases, more than one factor may contribute.

This is an important distinction because the presence of recession alone does not tell us whether a tooth is in danger.

What matters is why the gum has receded—and what is happening to the bone and supporting tissues underneath.

More of the tooth or root may become exposed, which can affect appearance and cause sensitivity. Recession does not necessarily mean that the tooth has lost the support it needs to remain stable.

The bone and tissues that hold the tooth in place have been compromised.

When periodontal disease causes significant loss of the supporting bone and tissues around a tooth, the tooth may eventually become loose and, in advanced cases, be at risk of being lost.

The key distinction is that visible gum recession and loss of the underlying support around a tooth are not always the same thing.

When Can Receding Gums Put Your Teeth at Risk?

Gum recession becomes more concerning when it is associated with periodontal disease and loss of the bone that supports the teeth.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that can damage the gums, periodontal ligament, and supporting bone around the teeth. As this support is lost, teeth may eventually become mobile and, in advanced cases, be at risk of being lost.

This is why it is important not to judge the health of a tooth based on the appearance of the gumline alone. A tooth with visible recession may still have healthy support, while periodontal disease can sometimes progress without dramatic recession being obvious to the patient.

How Do We Know Whether a Receding Tooth Is Healthy?

A dental examination can help determine whether recession is primarily a gumline concern or part of a larger periodontal problem.

Your dentist may evaluate the depth of the spaces around the teeth, look for signs of inflammation or bleeding, assess whether any teeth are mobile, and use dental X-rays to evaluate the supporting bone.

Together, these findings help us understand why the recession is occurring, whether it is progressing, and whether the health and stability of the tooth are being affected.

Can Gum Recession Be Treated?

Treatment depends on what is causing the recession, how advanced it is, and whether it is continuing to progress.

In some cases, the first step may be addressing contributing factors—such as modifying brushing technique, managing inflammation, or treating periodontal disease—to help protect the gums and supporting structures from further damage.

When recession is more significant, treatment may sometimes involve referral to a periodontist to evaluate whether procedures such as gum grafting are appropriate.

The goal is not simply to cover an exposed root. It is to understand the underlying cause and create a plan that helps protect the tooth and preserve its supporting structures over time.

So, can receding gums cause you to lose your teeth?

Gum recession by itself does not necessarily mean that a tooth will be lost. The greater concern is whether the bone and tissues supporting the tooth have also been damaged.
